Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.
  ~ Albert Einstein

They say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.
  ~ Andy Warhol

On m'a dit: Tu n'es que cendres et poussières. On a oublié de me dire qu'il s'agissait de poussières d'étoiles. (They told me that I am nothing but ashes and dust. They forgot to mention that it is actually star dust.)
  ~ Hubert Reeves

"The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then - to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look at what a lot of things there are to learn - pure science, the only purity there is. You can learn astronomy in a lifetime, natural history in three, literature in six. And then, after you have exhausted a million lifetimes in biology and medicine and theocriticism and geography and history and economics - why, you can start to make a cartwheel out of the appropriate wood, or spend fifty years learning to begin to learn to beat your adversary at fencing. After that you can start again on mathematics, until it is time to learn to plough."
~ T.H. White, from the book, The Once and Future King

Gott sei Dank, daß der Spaß nicht totzukriegen ist in dieser ach so sehr mürrischen Welt. (Thank God that not all fun can be killed in this very sullen world.)
  ~Wilhelm Raabe

One day an old alley cat was out for a walk when he noticed a kitten chasing its tail around in circles. Slightly amused, the old alley cat watched this go on for quite some time. Finally he walked up to the kitten and said, Excuse me little Kitten, I've been watching you for quite some time chasing your tail in circles, what exactly are you doing?
Without stopping, the kitten replied, I just got out of Cat Philosophy School. Today we learned two things: The first is that the most important thing to a cat is happiness.
There was an awkward silence as the kitten was clearly out of breath. And the second thing? asked the old alley cat.
The kitten took a deep breath, The second thing is that happiness is found in our tail. So I've been chasing my tail because when I catch it *gasp*I'll have a hold on eternal happiness.
The old alley cat was amused. You know, I may have not had the same advantages you've had in life. And I never went to Cat Philosophy School. But I've been out on the streets for the last 13 years and I've learned the same thing.
Really, said the kitten, Did you catch your tail and get eternal happiness?
The old alley cat shook his head, No, I never caught it.
The kitten stopped chasing his tail and turned to face the alley cat, Well, what happened then?
The old alley cat said, It's true that happiness is the most important thing in the world for a cat. And it's true that it is indeed located in our tail.
  He paused before continuing.
But I've discovered that if I go about my business and live my life the way I want to my tail follows me wherever I go.

  "What gets us into trouble
is not what we don't know.
It's what we know for sure
  that just ain't so."
  ~ Mark Twain

"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect." ~ Mark Twain

"Wir sind nicht nur für das verantwortlich, was wir tun, sondern auch für das, was wir widerspruchslos hinnehmen." (We are not just responsible for what we do but also for all that we accept without protest.) ~Arthur Schopenhauer

We all have obligations and duties toward our fellow men. But it does seem curious enough that in modern neurotic society, men's energies are consumed in making a living and rarely in living itself. It takes a lot of courage for a man to declare, with clarity and simplicity, that the purpose of life is to enjoy it.
  ~Lin Yutang

Sometimes there are more tears than laughter, and sometimes there is more laughter than tears, and sometimes you feel so choked you can neither weep nor laugh. For tears and laughter there will always be so long as there is human life. When our tear wells have run dry and the voice of laughter is silenced, the world will be truly dead.
  ~Lin Yutang

Life can only be understood backwards; it must be lived forwards.
  ~Søren Kierkegaard

"When you realize that to produce, you must obtain permission from those who produce nothing; when you see that money flows to those who deal not in goods but in favors; when you notice that many become rich through bribery and influence rather than by their work, and that the laws do not protect you from them but, instead, they are protected from you; when you discover that corruption is rewarded and honesty becomes a form of self-sacrifice, then you can confidently say, without fear of being wrong, that your society is doomed."
  ~Ayn Rand

They tried to bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds.
  ~Greek poet Dinos Christianopoulos

The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg.
  ~ Roald Dahl

"To laugh often and much: To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded."
  ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Truth has to be repeated constantly, because error also is being preached all the time, and not just by a few, but by the multitude. In the press and encyclopaedias, in schools and universities, everywhere error holds sway, feeling happy and comfortable in the knowledge of having majority on its side.
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe The holy secret is this: If you wish to end your suffering, seek to end the suffering of others. If you wish for happiness, seek the happiness of others. Exchanging thoughts of self for thoughts of others - this is the most effective way to be happy.
  ~ David Michie

What you can do, or dream you can, begin it; boldness has genius, power, and magic in it
  ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
